Practices for Employee Well-Being in Organizations

Many people believe that workplace well-being is a nice-to-have, but it is not; it is now actually essential and a must-have. The health and safety executive stated in their illness absence numbers for the UK in 2018 that 57% of all sickness absence is attributable to stress, mental health, depression, and anxiety. 57% is among the highest of any developed countries in Europe. Many organizations associate well-being with tea, soda, or coffee and chips at your desk, beanbags, and mindfulness at lunchtime; this is actually not the case. It’s the culture you cultivate that makes people feel respected and trusted, hence, you need to have a strategy.

Three keys to the well-being paradox:

  1. EQ Training: Ensure that line managers, from the shop floor to the top floor, receive emotional intelligence or EQ training as there are not enough of them, and provide a culture in which managers lead by reward rather than fear and trusting employees enough to offer them more independence in performing tasks and authority over their job.

  2. Flexibility: Allow employees to work with more flexibility than they currently do. In the United Kingdom, two out of every three couples are working couples or single parents, and they want flexibility not only for childcare but also for elder care, or they require it due to where they live. Technological advances allow People to work much more freely than ever before so striking this balance can be achieved with relative ease; it’s about the organization refraining from employees showing up early and staying late at the office which is the traditional model.

  3. Respecting Employees' Time Off: What managers often ignore is emails. Emails are killing people because it forces them to be online around the clock, seven days a week on work-related activities. There should be a humane culture in the organization respecting employees’ time off work schedules. Hence, a culture of email etiquette is vital to organizational well-being.

Having managers that facilitate this caring culture, helps ensure that everyone in the workplace will be in a much better shape bringing in a higher productivity rate. It is not about putting apples on desks; rather, it is about shaping your culture and genuinely caring for your people. Organizations that embrace this will ultimately survive and thrive, and we at Q2 HR Solutions can help you with that.
